Jay Z heads up north, adding a Canadian veteran to his label. Toronto-based rapper Belly has signed to Roc Nation, set to release his first studio album under the Roc in 2016. Born in Palestine and raised in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, Belly made a name for himself in the mid-aughts, collaborating with artists like Snoop Dogg, Scarface, Fabolous, and more. After taking an extended break from music following 2007’s The Revolution LP, the rapper formed a tight friendship with The Weeknd, launching their XO imprint.
The 31-year-old co-wrote six songs off The Weeknd’s The Beauty Behind the Madness LP, including the smash-hits “The Hills,” “Often,” and “Earned It.” “can’t put into words how proud I am. 2016 gonna be bumpin @belly,” said The Weeknd of Belly’s new venture.
Head to Billboard when Belly discusses meeting Jay Z, signing to Roc Nation, re-releasing a single called “Might Not” with The Weeknd in December. Click below to watch the video for “No Option” off the Up For Days mixtape.
