Today is the day, 100,000 – 300,000 Dominican born persons of Haitian decent will become stateless. They will be stripped of passports, their homes and have no civil rights.
The reason you ask? Because they are black.
Xenophobic Dominican Republic has had a long history of committing “social cleaning” in the country, ridding its country of anyone who is not of fair skin, which overwhelmingly impacts the large Haitian population that calls the country home. In 1937 Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the massacre of tens of thousands of Haitians for the sole idea, that they were making the nation darker by mothering and fathering Dominican/Haitian babies (God forbid darkening an already African descended people). Trujillo’s equally anti-Black bredren, former Dominican president Joaquin Balaguer claimed that Haitians had a secret weapon to invade DR, a “biological” weapon that allowed them to multiply rapidly similar to a vegetable species.
And the antiblackness trend has remained prevalent midway into the year 2015.
Anyone born after 1929 to non Dominican parents will have all of their rights revoked.
They will be identified solely based on their features. If they possess “Haitian features” they must be Haitian and will be deported. The government has called for deportation centers along the border, which have misleadingly been named “Welcome Centers” and have requested that 36 buses be vacant for their use during this time.
They will be dropped off at the border of a country that they have no connections or ties to. Many cannot speak Creole, do not have a location to stay and have never even set foot in the neighboring country.
Post 2010 earthquake/cholera stricken Haiti already has a slew of problems, homelessness, lack of medical resources and poverty to name a few. The public health impact of dropping off 250,000 people who will contribute to these buckets, and strain an already crippling system. The affects will be astronomical.
Although these people have “Haitian features” they are not Haitian, so acquiring Haitian citizenship will not be as easy as shipping them on a bus to the border. DR has proclaimed that there is a system to citizenship for Haitians, but these systems have been reportedly intentionally flawed. The offices that have been set up are understaffed, overcrowded and lack organization and follow up. Many people have been through the process set forth and are still waiting to see if their paperwork has been processed months later.
Antiblackness has trickled down from white and into all groups of color and it is disgusting to see the hatred amongst groups whose differences should be unifying.
